Study on Reducing Delirium Risk in Postoperative Patients
Malaz Boustani, MD
Primary Investigator
Brief description of study
This proposed study would develop and test an innovative hospital intervention to mitigate delirium risk, reducing delirium symptoms and patient-reported distress. Results of this proposed study would be used to inform the future design of the intervention as well as conduct a future feasibility and acceptability study.
Detailed description of study
Participants are being asked to review the iPREPARED website and preparatory video.
- 60 minute 1:2 interviews that will include watching the video, completing a survey and answering questions about the video and video content.

This study investigates ways to reduce the risk of delirium in patients who have had surgery. Delirium is when a person becomes very confused and can't think clearly, often after surgery. The study will look at how involving family members and caregivers can help reduce delirium symptoms and distress in patients.
Participants will review a website and watch a video as part of the study. They will also take part in interviews that last about 60 minutes. During the interview, they will watch the video, answer questions, and fill out a survey about the video.
- Who can participate: Patients over 50 who had elective surgery with a hospital stay of 2 days or more in the past 4 months, or those scheduled for such surgery, can participate. Informal caregivers in contact with the patient during their hospital stay may also join.
- Study details: Participants will review the iPREPARED website and watch a video. They will participate in interviews, which include answering questions and completing a survey.
