Brief description of study
Why is this study being done?
The Division of Clinical Pharmacology at Indiana University is looking for volunteers with and without high blood pressure to participate in a research study to better understand how the immune system regulates blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. This study will look at the differences in cells and chemicals in the blood between people who have high blood pressure with or without heart disease and people who have normal blood pressure. We want to know if there are cells or chemicals in the blood that may help us understand why some people develop high blood pressure.
The study is being conducted by Dr. Meena Madhur andhe Department of Medicine, Division of Clinical Pharmacology at
Indiana University. It is funded by the National Institutes of Health
and internal funding.
Who can take part?
Individuals, ages 18-85, who have normal blood pressure OR have high blood pressure.
Detailed description of study
What will happen during the study?
If you are eligible and choose to participate, we will:
- Take your blood pressure 3 times while you are sitting down.
- Measure your height and weight.
- Take a blood sample (about 8 teaspoons) from your arm with a needle. If possible, we will do this at the same time you are having another blood sample taken for your health care.
Incentive/compensation
- Participants will be provided $25 as compensation for their involvement in the study which requires one study visit and a blood draw.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Healthy, High Blood Pressure, Hypertension
-
Age: 18 years - 85 years
-
Gender: All
Inclusion criteria for hypertensive subjects:
- Age 18-85 AND
- New or pre-existing diagnosis of essential hypertension by a physician regardless of current blood pressure OR
- Subjects with average systolic blood pressure >130 on no antihypertensive therapy
Inclusion criteria for healthy volunteers:
- Age 18-85 AND
- Systolic blood pressure <120 and Diastolic blood pressure < 80
Exclusion criteria for hypertensive subjects:
- Confirmed or suspected renal, renovascular, or endocrine (primary hyperaldosteronism and pheochromocytoma) causes of secondary hypertension
- Concomitant diabetes mellitus, type I or II
- Treatment with corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, or other direct immunomodulatory or chemotherapeutic drugs
- Treatment with agents known to increase BP (e.g., adrenergic agonists for management of ADHD, chronic use of decongestants, or chronic use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents)
- Recent (within 3 months) vaccination against any infectious agent
- Active ongoing malignancy or infection, with the exception of basal cell carcinoma of the skin
- Severe psychiatric disorders
- HIV/AIDS or hepatitis C
- Systemic inflammatory or autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease or the collagen vascular diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, among others)
- Pregnancy
- Any other illness that in the judgment of the investigator may include an inflammatory component that may bias the results (e.g., multiple sclerosis)
Exclusion criteria for healthy volunteers - Same as above but also:
- Use of antihypertensive drugs for any reason unrelated to blood pressure elevation (e.g., beta-blockers for migraines, calcium channel blockers for arrhythmias, alpha-1 blockers for prostate hypertrophy)
