HEALTHY ADULTS NEEDED FOR SKIN INFECTION STUDY

Overview

DID YOU KNOW?.... The germ Haemophilus ducreyi (H. ducreyi) causes a type of skin infection that has become a public health problem in developing countries, such as Africa, Asia and the tropics.
More information is needed to find out how the skin disease caused by the germs progresses over time, and how the human immune system fights the disease.

That is why researchers in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Indiana University School of Medicine are studying this germ to determine how the bacteria infects the skin, how the bacteria causes infection, and why some people get sores and others do not.

Your participation will provide researchers information that may be used to develop a vaccine to prevent this type of skin infection or lead to the development of new antibiotic treatments.

Description

Volunteers will be paid for their participation.
Visits include the screening, germ placement, skin monitoring, biopsy if indicated, and suture removal if biopsy is done. Visits are  typically 15 minutes to up to 2 hours depending on visit type.

  • Participants will be asked to attend in-person study visits at University Hospital and the Medical Science building on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis, IN.
  • Volunteers must be willing to be HIV tested and undergo skin biopsies.
  • The total duration of participation is up to 3 weeks, with follow-up phone calls 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 6 months later.
Compensation
  • Participants will be compensated for their time and will receive $50 for the screening visit, $50 for the inoculation visit, $50 for the antibiotic visit,  $50 for each biopsy, and $25 for each follow up visit.  Free parking or bus fare tickets will also be provided on the day of each study visit.
