Brief description of study
ARE YOU A SELF-DESCRIBED "CHAIN-SMOKER" WITH NO INTEREST IN QUITTING? DO YOU LIVE NEAR BLOOMINGTON, IN? Join Our Study!
Researchers in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University are looking for adults who are heavy smokers to take part in a study looking at how nicotine affects the brain.
Volunteers will need to visit Imaging Research Facility at IU Bloomington for participating and thus, volunteers must live locally near Bloomington, IN in order to participate.
Your participation will help researchers to better understand how the brain responds to nicotine, which will provide a better scientific understanding of nicotine addiction.
Detailed description of study
Who is Eligible
- Adults between the ages of 18 and 50
- If female, must not be be pregnant
- Must be smoking 3/4 pack or more cigarettes per day OR must be vaping >= 120 mg nicotine per day
- Right-handed
- Should be willing to abstain from smoking, vaping, or other forms of nicotine use for 6 hours prior to participation
- Should not have contraindications to MRI, including past history of claustrophobia or non-removable ferromagnetic objects in their bodies
- Must live locally near to Bloomington, IN
What is Involved
- One 2-hr study visit involving an MR scan at the Imaging Research Facility on IU Bloomington campus - Participants will need to remain abstinent from smoking, vaping, or other form of nicotine use 6 hours prior to participation.
Compensation
- Participants will be compensated $35/hr and will receive between $70 and $110 for completing the study requirements. This includes hourly payment and other compliance bonuses.

Inclusion criteria:
- Between ages 18 and 50
- Must be smoking 3/4 pack or more cigarettes per day OR must be vaping >= 120 mg nicotine per day
Exclusion criteria:
- Pregnant
- Left-handed
- Have contraindications to MRI, including past history of claustrophobia or non-removable ferromagnetic objects in their bodies
- Inability or unwillingness to abstain from smoking, vaping, or other forms of nicotine use for 6 hours prior to participation
