Brief description of study

What is it about?
The purpose of the study is to learn about how adolescents and young adults with autism listen to different types of sounds, including spoken language. 
 
Who is leading the study?
Rachel Kasthurirathne, MA, CCC-SLP is a doctoral student at Indiana University Bloomington. She is conducting the study under the supervision of Dr. Karen Forrest. 

Detailed description of study

Where will the study happen?
You can chose to come to either to IU Bloomington or Butler University.
 
How long will the study take?
If you finish the entire study, it will take about 3 hours. You can choose to complete the study in 1 or 2 visits and can take breaks when you need them.
 
What will I do?
You will take hearing, thinking, and language tests, listen to sounds, read aloud, and talk with the researcher.
 
Will I be paid?
Yes, you will be paid a rate of $15 per hour (max of $45). Your parent will be paid $5.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder
  • Age: 14 years - 20 years
  • Gender: All

Am I a fit for the study?
Yes if.... 
 
+ You have autism or asperger's syndrome
+ You speak american-english
+ You have typical hearing 
         - Note: To be in the study, you need to pass a hearing screening
+ You have NEVER been diagnosed with a head injury, epilepsy, or intellectual disability
         - Note: To complete the study, you need to pass a thinking test
+ You have NO additional genetic or birth disorders. 
         - Note: It is okay if you have a condition that is commonly linked to autism, such as anxiety, depression, or ADD/ADHD; however, other conditions may keep you from volunteering. Please ask the researcher if you are unsure.
+ Your parent is willing to fill out surveys about you as part of the study

Parking: You can park in the Sunset Avenue Garage. The researcher will reimburse you for parking expenses. 

Location Option 2: 

IU Speech & Hearing Clinic
200 S Jordan Ave
Bloomington, Indiana 47405
Parking: Parking is onsite and free. The clinic office will provide you with a parking pass.
