Brief description of study

The purpose of the study is to learn about the gait characteristics of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). We also want to understand how we should design and implement a tool to monitor gait. To this end, the "Gait Monitoring Study" (a.k.a., AlzInsole) gathers requirements by interviewing patients, informal (e.g., family) caregivers, and healthcare professionals.

THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Patients with a diagnosis of cognitive impairment, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, will be recruied from some of the specialty clinics within Eskenazi Health or IU Health where these patients receive care. Older patients recruited from the community or other sites (e.g., Alzheimer's Association) may also be suspected of cognitive impairment.

Detailed description of study

Participants will complete a 60-90 min. interview. During interviews, participants will be provided with mockup materials of gait monitoring devices (e.g., insoles), related materials (e.g., charging mat), and monitoring reports,

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Alzheimer’s disease, Dementia, ADRD
  • Age: 18 years - 100 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion:

The following inclusion criteria are specific to participants who are patients or caregivers:
-A patient with Alzheimer's disease or related dementia (ADRD) or their caregiver, defined as an individual who performs or assists in performing health- or disease related activities.
-Aged 18 or older
-English-speaking
-Able to attend an individual or group interview

The following inclusion criteria are specific to participants who are healthcare professionals (HCPs):
-A healthcare professional, defined as any person providing care or managing care provision to patients, with care broadly defined and including preventive care, testing, education; care management functions include care coordination, scheduling, planning, communication, and more. A non-exhaustive list of healthcare professional types includes physicians, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, social workers, care coordinators or case managers, dietitians, psychometricians, physical therapists, mental/behavioral health providers, clinical and operational managers, clinical assistants, and office staff.
-Aged 18 or older
-English-speaking

Exclusion:

The following exclusion criteria are specific to participants who are patients or caregivers:
-Institutionalized (e.g., nursing home).
-Non-English speaking.

The following exclusion criteria are specific to participants who are healthcare professionals (HCPs):
-Non-English speaking.
-No longer employed in healthcare.

This study investigates the walking patterns of people with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The purpose is to gather information to design a tool that can monitor how these individuals walk. Alzheimer's disease is a condition that affects memory and thinking, and it can change the way a person moves.

Participants will take part in an interview that lasts about 60 to 90 minutes. During the interview, they will see and talk about sample materials like special insoles and charging mats, which are part of the gait monitoring devices.

  • Who can participate: People aged 18 or older with Alzheimer's disease or related dementias, their caregivers, or healthcare professionals can participate. All participants must speak English and be able to attend an interview.
  • Study details: Participants will be involved in interviews where they discuss and provide feedback on sample gait monitoring devices to gather insights on improving the tools.
