Overview
Researchers at Indiana University School of Nursing/Riley Children's Hospital are looking for children and their parents/caregivers to take part in a study to find out how play activities, like stories and music, can be used to help lower young child and caregiver stress and improve quality of life during cancer treatment.
We are inviting children ages 3-8 who have standard or high-risk ALL, or LyLy, and their parent/caregiver who is 18 years of age or older, to participate.
All study activities will take place during the child's routine visits.
Your participation will help researchers to better understand how these programs can help parents and young children cope better with treatment.
Description
What will happen if my child and I participate?
- You will complete questionnaires on a computer tablet about yourself, your child, and your experiences during your child's cancer treatment
- You and your child will be randomly assigned, like the flip of a coin, to one of two groups; either music or audio storybook sessions
- Music play activities include instruments, action songs, and puppets, and audio-storybook activities include listening to and looking at illustrated storybooks
- Sessions are led by a board-certified music therapist, and consist of either four or eight 30-minute play sessions that take place in the outpatient clinic during your child's regular appointment
- Both groups will have saliva and blood samples collected to look at a
biological marker of stress and immune function
- Blood samples are taken only from your child, during their regularly scheduled blood draws
- Participants will be able to keep either the music or the audio storybooks kit
- The parent/caregiver may be asked to complete a follow-up interview to share their thoughts and feelings about the program

Eligibility
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

Conditions:
acute lymphoblastic leukemia,lymphoblastic lymphoma,cancer

Age: Between 3 Years - 8 Years

Gender: All
You and your child may be eligible to participate if:
- You/parent/caregiver are 18 years of age or older
- Your child is 3 to 8 years old with a diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) or Lymphoblastic Lymphoma (LyLy)
- Your child is currently receiving induction therapy
- You will be available to participate in play sessions with your child
- English is your primary language
