Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to understand how and where brain dopamine reacts while you smoke a cigarette.

Detailed description of study

We are looking for people who drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.  Studies take approximately 10 hours over 2-3 days and you may get paid $200 on completion.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: healthy,smoking,smokers
  • Age: 18 years - 55 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria
Able to complete and understand study questionnaires and procedures in English
Otherwise healthy male and female cigarette smokers
Right-handed
Subjects should be daily smokers (not "chippers")
 
Exclusion Criteria
Any neurological or other medical disorder which may compromise subject safety or influence study outcomes as determined by the PI
Presenting to the laboratory with a positive BrAC on the screening visit
Women who are pregnant, breast-feeding, or of childbearing potential and not using birth control
Taking any medication in the past 30 days which could influence study outcomes
Taking prescription opioid medication
Testing positive for amphetamine, cocaine, opiates, benzodiazepines, or barbiturates determined by urine toxicology screening
A history of seizures
Having no telephone or a reliable way in which study personal can contact them
Subjects who are claustrophobic and cannot tolerate imaging procedures
Subject who are contraindicated for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on standard IU screening forms: subjects who have metal implants, surgical devices, or other metal objects that would compromise the subject's health during the MRI
Subjects who weigh > 350 lb
Refusal or inability to refrain from smoking the day of the PET imaging study
Any reason that, in the opinion of the investigators, may put the subject at risk or that may compromise the validity or generalizability of the data
