Brief description of study

In recent years, many complications have been attributed to breast implants including chronic fatigue and other symptoms associated with autoimmune diseases, called Breast Implant Illness (BII). Some women have even developed a rare type of T-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma around their breast implants, called BIA-ALCL. Hundreds of women have been affected by BII/BIAALCL and many have lost their lives to BIA-ALCL. Most of the scientific literature addressing breast implant associated complications focuses on implant materials despite the fact that silicone – the material used in implants – has been proven to be safe in multiple studies. This is why more research is needed to understand other factors that may be contributing to breast implant complications.

Detailed description of study

Researchers will collect a blood sample as well as the surgically discarded specimens which would be disposed as medical waste. Researchers will also collect information from participants' medical record, and participants will complete a questionnaire.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Breast Implant
  • Age: Between 18 Years - 100 Years
  • Gender: Female

Individuals at least 18 years of age undergoing removal of a breast implant.
Individuals with HIV or currently taking immunosuppressive medications will not be eligible.
Women who are pregnant will not be eligible.
