Research Study on DNA Repair Capacity in Lung Disease

Brief description of study
The DNA repair capacity (DRC) is a measure of a cell’s ability to repair DNA damage. High levels of DNA damage are observed in many lung diseases, including lung cancer and chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD, sometimes referred to as emphysema or chronic bronchitis). We believe that patients with a lower DRC may be at higher risk for development of lung diseases including lung cancer and COPD. The purpose of this study is to measure the DRC in peripheral blood monocytes from smoking and non-smoking patients with and without lung cancer compared to healthy controls
THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Consistent with most oncology trials, patients are not actively “recruited,” but are screened by their physician for appropriate clinical trial(s) at the time of their routine clinic visit. Occasionally, a patient may be a self-referral or physician referral, but are still screened for appropriate clinical trials at the time of their routine clinic visit. PI and staff may send copies of relevant consent forms to these patients to look over prior to actually consenting or enrolling them. This may take place at the patient's visit at which the consent is presented or the patient's next visit to the outpatient hematology/oncology clinic.

Detailed description of study
Participants will complete a blood draw and answer a few questions related to the research. Researchers may also review participants' medical record.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Lung Cancer, Healthy

Age: 18 years - 100 years

Gender: All
Inclusion criteria
- Individuals at least 18 years of age with or without stage I-IV NSCLC.
Exclusion criteria
- Individuals with severe anemia, or other known malignancy in the past 5 years
- .Women who are pregnant
This study investigates the DNA repair capacity (DRC) in lung disease. DRC is a measure of how well cells can fix damage to their DNA. High DNA damage is often found in lung diseases like lung cancer and chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The purpose of this study is to compare the DRC in blood cells from smokers and non-smokers, both with and without lung cancer, to healthy people.
Participants in this study will have a blood draw and answer some questions related to the research. Researchers may also look at participants' medical records to gather more information.
- Who can participate: Adults aged 18 and older, with or without stage I-IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), may participate. People with severe anemia, other cancers in the past 5 years, or who are pregnant cannot join.
- Study details: Participants will provide a blood sample and answer questions related to the study. Researchers may also review their medical records.
