Brief description of study

DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW HAVE DEPRESSION?

Have you spent weeks feeling hopeless, unmotivated, worthless, and down?

Do you lack interest in your favorite hobbies?

Join Our Study and Help Researchers Discover A New Treatment For Depression!

Researchers at Indiana University School of Medicine are looking for adults who suffer from depression to take part in a study to learn more about the effects of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) treatments at the middle of the forehead on symptoms of depression and brain function.  rTMS is a non-invasive method of stimulating the brain and changing the way the parts of your brain communicate with each other.

Results from this study will help us better understand the nature of the disorder with the goal of improving ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat Depression.

Detailed description of study

What Will Happen During the Study?

You will first be asked to attend a screening visit. You will undergo some assessments to find out if you meet the study requirements (eligibility). Your medical records may be accessed and reviewed to do this.

Study participation involves:

  • Attending 20 daily rTMS sessions (spread out over 4-5 weeks, 5 days per week) at the IU Health Neuroscience Center in Indianapolis, IN.
  • Completing 3 MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans
  • Your study participation may last up up to 6 weeks.

Incentive/Compensation

  • Participants will receive up to $250 for completing all of the study requirements

We are currently enrolling eligible participants in a study of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) in patients with depression. We will study depression symptoms with surveys and brain effects with MRI. rTMS is a treatment for depression that involves sitting in a chair while a device sends magnetic pulses into the brain. For our study, we will stimulate an area of the brain located at the forehead, called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Does this study sound of interest to you?
