Brief description of study

Researchers at IU School of Medicine and Purdue University are looking for healthy male volunteers take part in a study to determine if taking a hormone called testosterone can reduce the risk of a heart rhythm abnormality.  

Detailed description of study

What Participation Involves
  • Attend 3 study visits to the Indiana Clinical Research Center at University Hospital in Indianapolis.   
  • You will be asked to take testosterone or a placebo for 3 days before your visit.
  • During two of the study visits, you will be given a drug called Covert through an IV, blood samples will be taken and you will wear a heart monitor.
Compensation
  • Participants will receive up to $500 for completing all of the study requirements.
 
Who is Eligible
  • Men at least 65 years of age or older
  • No history of heart attack, coronary heart disease or heart arrhythmia requiring treatment
  • No diagnosis of heart failure or must not have a pacemaker
  • No history of breast or prostate cancer
  • Must not have current diagnosis of benign prostate hyperplasia
  • No history of long QT syndrome
  • Must not be undergoing hormone replacement therapy (estradiol, progesterone and/or testosterone)

  • Conditions: healthy
  • Age: Between 65 Years - 100 Years
  • Gender: Male

Who is Eligible
  • Men at least 65 years of age or older
  • No history of heart attack, coronary heart disease or heart arrhythmia requiring treatment
  • No diagnosis of heart failure or must not have a pacemaker
  • No history of breast or prostate cancer
  • Must not have current diagnosis of benign prostate hyperhyperplasia
  • No history of long QT syndrome
  • Must not be undergoing hormone replacement therapy (estradiol, progesterone and/or testosterone
