Brief description of study

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) has been well-established as an efficacious and first- line treatment for insomnia in adults, but research on its use with adolescents is limited. Preliminary evidence is promising for using CBT-I with adolescents, but the treatment protocols are heterogeneous with various adaptations that have been made. Systematic adaptation through collaboration with stakeholdersmay enhance acceptability, feasibility, engagement, retention, and efficacy of behavioral treatment for insomnia in adolescents, especially given the distinctive sleep physiology and lifestyle factors characteristic of adolescence. The proposed study seeks to elicit stakeholder perspectives on CBT-I to form an adapted treatment protocol (CBT-I for teens, CBT-IT).

Detailed description of study

Eligibility:
Three groups will be recruited (adolescents, parents, and health care providers).

All participants will reside in the US, have sufficient English language proficiency for consent and study participation, and have reliable internet access.
  • Adolescents (13-18 years) who meet ICSD-3 diagnostic criteria for Chronic Insomnia Disorder, currently or in the past year, based on self-reported insomnia symptoms, using a screening checklist. Exclusion criteria is cognitive impairment that would prohibit age-appropriate understanding of treatment materials.
  • Parents or other caregivers of adolescents (13-18 years) who meet ICSD-3 diagnostic criteria for Chronic Insomnia Disorder, based on parental report of their child’s symptoms, currently or in the past year. The parent/caregiver (hereafter referred to as a parent) must live in the home with the identified adolescent at least 50% of the time and must report playing a parental role for that adolescent. The identified adolescentmay or may not also be a participant.
  • Health care providers who provide behavioral treatment for insomnia in adolescents. Providers (i.e., physicians, psychologists, nurses) must have an active professional license, and they must have provided behavioral treatment for insomnia for at least 20 adolescents over the past two years.

What is Involved:
Two phases of focus groups will be conducted. All stakeholders will be asked to participate in one-hour focus group sessions conducted using the secure Zoom Health platform, with separate groups conducted for each stakeholder type (i.e., adolescents, parents, providers)

Compensation:
Participants will receive a $50 gift card for their time and effort.
