Parents and Teens Needed for Insomnia Study
Sarah Honaker
Primary Investigator
Brief description of study
Does your teen struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep, or get enough rest at night? Your teen may benefit from joining our DREAM IT study!
When teens can't sleep, families feel it, too. Sleep problems can affect school, mood, stress, and physical health. That is why researchers at Indiana University are looking for parents and teens to help test a treatment designed to help teens with insomnia.
The treatment we are testing is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).
You may qualify to take part in this study if you are the parent or caregiver of a teen (13–18 years of age) who struggles with insomnia.
Detailed description of study
What’s involved?
Teens who join the study will be placed into one of two groups by chance, like flipping a coin:
- A group that receives insomnia treatment from a therapist in virtual, individual sessions over the course of 8 weeks
- A waitlist group that will receive free access to an app based insomnia treatment 8 weeks after study enrollment
Both parents and teens will complete online surveys at 3 different times:
- Before treatment
- Right after treatment
- Two months later
Teens will also:
- Wear a sleep-tracking device (similar to a smartwatch) for one week before treatment and one week after treatment
- Complete virtual sessions with a therapist if placed in the treatment group (each session lasts up to one hour and takes place every 1–2 weeks over about 8 weeks total) OR teens in the waitlist receive an app-based treatment 8 weeks after study enrollment
- The treatment is completely free—families will not be charged, and insurance will not be billed.
Compensation
- As a thank you for their time, families who qualify and join the study will receive compensation for completing the study requirements.
