Brief description of study

The Purdue Aphasia Research Lab is inviting healthy adults to participate in a language learning study.  The goal is to develop a new treatment for brain injured patients. The information gathered from healthy adults will be used to compare with information gathered from people with aphasia. Aphasia is a language disorder acquired after brain injury, most commonly a stroke. 
 

Detailed description of study

What is Involved if I Participate?
  • You will be asked to complete 6-8 sessions (~2 hours each), including eligibility testing and follow up sessions.
  • During the sessions, you will be asked to complete a set of tasks such as describing pictures you see on a computer screen or reading sentences.  All tasks are non-invasive.
  • Study participation will last approximately 3-4 weeks.
Study sessions will take place at Purdue University (West Lafayette campus) OR our Indianapolis satellite lab location (near Keystone Fashion Mall). 
 
Will I Be Compensated for Participating?
 
  • You will receive $20 per in-person session and parking is FREE.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: generally healthy
  • Age: 40 years - 80 years
  • Gender: All

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

  • No history of neurological and psychiatric conditions (dementia, Parkinson's disease, chronic and uncontrolled depression, etc.)
  • Native English speaker
  • Normal or corrected-to-normal hearing and vision
     
* Final eligibility to be determined from phone screening and brief language/cognitive screening.
