Brief description of study

DO YOU LIKE TO RUN?  Join our RUNNING IN THE HEAT study!

Researchersdiana University Biomechanics Lab are looking for healthy volunteers ages 18-45 to take part in a study to investigate how running form changes during a run in a hot and humid environment

Participation involves running on a treadmill during 2-3 In-person study visits at the Integrative Kinesiology Laboratory located in the School of Public Health building at Indiana University Bloomington.

Compensation will be provided.

Detailed description of study

Who is eligible to participate?
  • Ages 18-45
  • Healthy recreational runners (recreationalunner = at least 1 year of running experience, running volume of at least 9 miles per week (15 km/week)
  • Must not be injured (injured = has sustained an injury in the past 6 months that reduced/stopped normal running and has not resumed normal weekly running volume for at least 8 weeks prior to enrollment)
  • No history of lower back/limb surgery
  • Must be willing to attend 2-3 in-person study visits at the Integrative Kinesiology Laboratory in Bloomington, IN
What is involved if I participate?
  • Two or three total visits
  • Urine pregnancy test for females
  • One visit for surveys/questionnaires related to your running training/history and physical activity and a movement and gait assessment (approx. 1.5 hrs). The movement and gait assessment will involve a series of motions (lunging, squatting, stepping down) and walking/running on a treadmill.
  • Two visits in the environmental chamber (approx. 2 hrs each). During the environmental chamber visits, subjects will run on the treadmill. One treadmill run will be performed in a moderate environment and one treadmill run will be performed in a hot and humid environment (the hot and humid environment will be similar to the hottest summer day you will experience in Bloomington, IN). One of these visits can be combined with visit 1.
  • Complete surveys and questionnaires related to your running training/history and physical activity.
Will I be compensated?
  • Participants will receive up to $200 in the form of a gift card for completing all of the study requirements.
How can I participate?
Please contact Jimmy McDonnell (jimcdon@iu.edu) or Kai Chien (kchien@iu.edu) for more information.
