Brief description of study

The Riley cardiology clinic screens children and teens with complex congential heart disease to support their emotional and behavioral well-being.  Routine screening of these patients is recommended by the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, but is currently inconsistent and is left to the primary care provider office.

Researchers at Indiana University School of Medicine and Riley Hospital for Children are conducting a research study looking at de-identified responses (i.e. screening forms will not be linked with individual patients) to mental health screening and recommendations made so that our research team can better understand the mental health needs of these children and teens as a group.

Our research team is planning to use study results to improve mental health screening and referral processes in thediatric cardiology clinics.

THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - the study team will be approaching and screening patients ages 6-17 years old with complex congenital heart disease that are scheduled for clinic visits at the Riley cardiology clinic only.

Detailed description of study

What Happens During Study Participation
  • Caregivers and youth (ages 12-17) will fill out mental health screening forms on a clinic tablet computer while they are in the outpatient cardiology clinic
  • The forms will likely take 5-10 minutes to fill out
  • Participants do not need to do anything else in addition to the screening forms to be part of the research study
