Brief description of study
Researchers at Indiana University School of Medicine are conducting a research study to better understand how obesity makes asthma and lung function worse. Obesity and asthma are two of the most important health problems affecting adolescents and adults. In the last few years, we haveund evidence that the amount of fat tissue may increase the risk of asthma, and it may make asthma symptoms worse.
For this study we will compare adipose tissue (fat tissue) from children and young adults (ages 6-24 years) with and without asthma, and with and without obesity. To do this, we will obtain two small samples of fat tissue from participants who are undergoing bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery).
THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Children, adolescents, and young adult patients will become potential candidates for the study when a clinical determination is made that it is indicated to perform appendectomy, cholecystectomy, or bariatric surgery. (This determination will be made by the patient's clinical team during the clinic or hospital visit in a private exam room and the patient will be approached directly by a study team member.)
Detailed description of study
What is Involved During Study Participation
The study consists of two parts (study participation lasts approx. 1-9 months):
1.) Study visit (1.5 hrs) - questionnaires, measurements of body composition and lung function, and a blood sample will be taken. This visit should occur approximately one month prior to scheduled bariatric surgery.
2.) Tissue sample collection - two very small pieces of fat tissue will be taken during the surgery; this will be done while the participant is under anesthesia, and it will not affect the participant's surgery or recovery. Study participation will end for the patient after we obtain tissue samples.
Incentive/Compensation
Participants will receive compensation for their time.
In addition, if a participant travels over 50 miles (each way) for the separate research visit, they will also receive reimbursement at standard government rates for travel in excess of those 50 miles.
Participants will also receive copies of their body composition analysis (including the amount of fat, water, and lean mass in the body), lung function, and blood test results.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Healthy, Asthma, Obesity, Riley

Age: 6 years - 24 years

Inclusion Criteria:
- Undergoing surgery for appendicitis, cholecystectomy, or bariatric surgery
Exclusion Criteria:
Significant chronic illness (other than asthma, OW/OB, or their complications);
Clinical determination of sepsis before or during the surgery;
Generalized peritonitis, abscess, perforation, or otherwise complicated appendicitis**;
Any circumstances that, in the judgment of the investigator or surgeon, may pose a risk to the participant;
Operative or other findings that may compromise the integrity of the AT samples.
