Brief description of study

Study title:  Virtual reality and computerized cognitive training for mild cognitive impairment in heart failure (Vita+Com study)

What is this study about?
Our team examines whether viewing nature on virtual reality goggles, game-like training on an iPad, or a combination of the two can improve cognitive function (memory and thinking).  We invite people who have heart failure and concerns about their memory and thinking.

Who can take part?
We are enrolling participants who are ages 55 or older, with heart failure, who are having trouble with their thinking and memory.

Participants' family member, significant other, or a close friend who could best answer questions about participants' function in daily activities (e.g., cooking, driving) will co-participate in this study.

Detailed description of study

What happens during study participation?

First, we will interview you to see if you are eligible to participate.  If you decide to participate, you will have 4 in-person interviews with our study team member over a 1-year period. During the interview, we will ask about your heart and brain health.

After the first interview, we will randomly (like the flip of a coin) assign you to 1 of 4 groups.
  1. If you are in the nature virtual reality group, you will be given virtual reality goggles to view nature pictures for 10 minutes per day, 2-3 days per week for 8 weeks.
  2. If you are in the iPad training group, you will be given a tablet computer to do brain training for 1 hour per day, 2-3 days per week for 8 weeks.
  3. If you are in the combined group, you will be given both the goggles and an iPad. You will beked to view the nature pictures and then do the brain training exercises for 1 hour and 10 minutes per day, 2-3 days per week for 8 weeks.
  4. If you are in the usual care group, you will not be asked to do any of these things.
Co-participants will meet us in-person or over the telephone to answer questions regarding participants' activities of daily living.

What is the incentive/compensation?

You will receive $50 for completing each interview; if you complete all 4 interviews, you will receive $200 total.

Co-participants will receive a $10 gift card upon completing each interview, a total of $40.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Have someone (e.g., family member, significant other, close friend) who will provide information about the participant's daily activities (e.g., cooking, driving, household work, managing finances, medications, and appointments)
We may NOT invite people who:
  • Have major neurological disorder (e.g., previously diagnosed dementia, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis)
  • Have major psychiatric disease (e.g., schizophrenia, bipolar disorder)
  • Have life-threatening unstable illness other than HF (e.g., end-stage cancer)
  • Are users of regular computerized cognitive training or participants in cognitive training trials in the past year
