Brief description of study

What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to develop a test for kidney disease that does not require a kidney biopsy or blood draw.  We will look at urine samples under a microscope and see if we find patterns in the kind of cells and how they appear in different kinds of kidney problems. We are using a special microscope called confocal microscopy that can take a close up of how cells appear. Our goal is to establish a urine biobank with samples from children with different types of kidney disease for biomarker studies.

THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Participants will be recruited from the inpatient, outpatient nephrology services and infusion center.  Potential research participants (children and adolescents) will be identified on the inpatient nephrology service or nephrology clinic and will be approached by study staff about participating.

Detailed description of study

What is involved in this study?
The study will involve a urine collection, minimum volume of 1ml:
1.    Urine will be collected in a plastic urine collection cup (generally up to 120 ml) and taken to the Schwaderer lab the same day
2.    The urine will be centrifuged at 5000rpm for 5 min, and the sediment will be evaluated as a fresh sample or fixed for long term analysis with different antibody and markers or both. The supernatant will be frozen at -80. The pellet will be collected for the purpose of this study.
3.    If the subject has repeat clinic visits and/or urine collection in the hospital – samples from multiple days may be used.

We will only collect random voided samples for the purpose of this study.  We will not catheterize, perform a suprapubic aspiration, or place a collection bag for the purpose of this study.  If a patient has urine collected by these methods for clinical indications, we may collect leftover urine.
