Brief description of study

FoRKS+ is a voluntary research study designed by researchers at the IU School of Medicine in partnership with Eskenazi Health to study the effect of brain-healthy foods and physical activity on cognition for Black adults with high blood pressure in the Eskenazi Health System. 

Detailed description of study

All participants in this study will:
  • Learn with others in hypertension group
  • Shop with gift cards to assist with food costs
  • Earn additional gift cards for completing study visits in your home
Some participants in this study will:
  • Cook with delivered meal kits during online group cooking classes
  • Move your body in online physical activity group 
For completing all study procedures, you have the potential to earn $120 in gift cards. 
 

Participation in this study will be 13-14 months long. 

By participating in this study, you will gain social contact, learn about healthy activities, and gain greater access to food and resources. You may also have the opportunity to improve your kitchen skills and your physical health.

The study is being conducted by Dr. Daniel Clark of Indiana University Center for Aging Research.  

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: High blood pressure, Hypertension
  • Age: 35 years - 75 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria:
1.   Fluent in English
2.   Marion County resident
3.   Eskenazi Health patient  
4.   Self-identified non-Hispanic and black/African-American/biracial including African-American
5.   Available to participate in study activities
6.   Stable housing with access to kitchen
7.   Able to exercise safely
8.  Average systolic blood pressure of ≥130 from measurements by study staff
 
Exclusion Criteria:
1.   Lives in nursing home
2.  Some neurological conditions
3.  Cancer with short life expectancy, or current chemotherapy or radiation therapy 
4.  Unwilling to use a touchscreen or be on video conferencing
