Overview

We aim to provide a Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) specimen biorepository to promote, facilitate and accelerate basic and clinical/translational studies of NEC in human infants.

Description

The purpose of this repository is to develop a national biorepository for infants diagnosed with Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) and control premature infants for the identification of biomarkers that can predict the development of NEC.

The birth mother and baby's involvement in the study will last as long as the baby is in the NICU. During the study, blood, stool, urine, saliva and stomach fluid samples are collected from the baby and breast milk samples are collected from the birthing mother. Information from the medical records of both baby and birthing mother is also collected.

This study is being conducted at Indiana University by Dr. Troy Markel. It is being managed by the University of North Carolina. It is funded by the National Institute of Health.
