Brief description of study
What is this study about?
The BRAiN Lab at Purdue University is seeking adults to participate in a research study that uses light to visualize brain activity when processing auditory and visual signals. The purpose of this study is to understand how auditory and visual information is processed in the brain of individuals with normal hearing and those with cochlear implants (CIs). We are particularly interested in how this brain activity relates to individuals’ ability to recognize conversational speech.
Who can take part?
Adults with normal hearing and those with cochlear implants (CIs).
Detailed description of study
What happens during study participation?
Study participation involves attending 2-3 sessions lasting about 2 hours each at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. During the study visits, we will perform the procedures indicated below, which may be done on the same day, or may be spread out over different days:
- Questionnaires - fill out information about your language background, hearing history, demographic information, handedness (i.e., right-handed or left- handed), etc.
- Speech Recognition Testing - you will be asked to listen to recorded audio materials consisting of words or sentences and to repeat back what you hear.
- Brain Imaging: you will be asked to sit in a comfortable chair in a sound-attenuating booth; our imaging procedure uses near-infrared light (red light) to illuminate the brain tissue to measure how much brain activity is present during listening to speech or watching someone speak.
Incentive/Compensation
- For participants with normal hearing, compensation is $15.00 per hour.
- For cochlear implant participants, compensation is $20.00 per hour plus travel reimbursement of $0.50 per mile for the distance you travel to and from Purdue University.
