VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Support LUNG HEALTH by being AWARE!

Brief description of study
Are you interested in TECHNOLOGY? Join our AWARE (Acoustic Waveform Respiratory Evaluation) Research Study!
Why is this study being done?
Researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine are doing a research study to understand how well smartphone technology can measure the size of your airways and if it can help diagnose certain diseases of the lung. Mobile technologies have the potential to improve patient care and quality of life. We are looking for volunteers to help us learn how to use smartphones to monitor lung function, and to identify changes in the airways that are associated with disease attacks.
Who can participate?
Individuals 8-65 years of age who are healthy or who have asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis (CF), and other airway disorders.
Additional information
Study title: Acoustic Waveform Respiratory Examination (AWARE)
This study is being conducted by Erick Forno, MD, MPH in the department of Pulmonary, Allergy/Immunology, and Sleep Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. It is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Detailed description of study
What will happen during study participation
- You will be asked to attend 1 in-person study visit (60-90 min) to the pulmonary function test lab at Riley Hospital for Children.
- You will answer questionnaires about your health and activity, and we will get body composition measurements, along with height and weight.
- You will then perform AWARE and other pulmonary function tests (PFTs) by blowing into the mouthpiece of different instruments to see how well your lungs are working.
- Participation in this research study may include using the non-invasive AWARE system at home. The AWARE system uses a smartphone’s speaker and microphone to send and receive high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) that only the phone can detect to examine the size of your airways and any potential narrowing or obstruction.
Here’s what these PFTs may include:
- Spirometry: This test measures how much air you can breathe in and out, how quickly, and for how long you can blow air out of your lungs.
- Lung volumes: These tests look at the total amount of air your lungs can hold.
- Airway oscillometry (AOS): This checks how your airways react to different pressures.
- Exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO): It measures a gas you breathe out, which can give clues about lung inflammation.
Incentive/compensation
- You will be paid for your participation in this study with a re-loadable Visa payment card.
- If you participate in the one-visit research study, you will receive $50 once all measurements are completed (all AWARE measurements and PFTs).
- If you are selected to complete measurements at home for up to 7-14 days, you will receive another $100 (total $150) once all AWARE measurements are completed and your study phone is returned undamaged to the research team. If you are in the subgroup of participants who completes two visits (one when doing well and another when sick), you will receive $50 after completing each visit ($100 total).
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

-
Age: Between 8 Years - 65 Years
-
Gender: All
Inclusion criteria:
1) Ages 8 to 65 years (to ensure ability to perform other PFTs).
2) Ability to perform spirometry or airway oscillometry (AOS).
3) Signed informed consent (and assent for children as appropriate).
4) Either no respiratory or other major disease (for healthy controls) or physician-diagnosed airway diseases, such as asthma, COPD, CF, bronchiectasis, primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), or similar.
Exclusion criteria:
1) Inability or unwillingness to perform spirometry, AOS, or AWARE.
