Brief description of study

In order to best support the parents of these babies during this hospital stay, we must have more information on their perspective and a deeper understanding of their experiences during this time. 

Detailed description of study

Objective 1: To explore the experiences and needs of parents bereaved of a newborn of a multiple birth while a co-multiple remains hospitalized. 
Objective 2: To analyze and describe these experiences in order to better understand any common themes or needs of this group of parents. 
Objective 3: To identify ways in which the medical team can better support this group.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: multiple birth
  • Age: Between 18 Years - 100 Years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria:
  • Parent (mother or father) at least 18 years of age 
  • Parent who experienced the death (intrauterine or neonatal) of one or more co-multiples of a surviving hospitalized infant
  • Time since death of multiple >13 days
  • Parent whose surviving infant(s) is/was hospitalized in a NICU 
  • Either the surviving multiple or the deceased multiple was hospitalized in either the Riley Simon Family Tower (SFT) level IV NICU or the Methodist/Maternity Tower level III NICU OR
  • Parent whose infants were hospitalized in a NICU other than the Riley SFT or Methodist/Maternity Tower NICU, who were referred to the study by a parent already in the study
  • Surviving infant remains hospitalized at time of recruitment or was discharged after July 1, 2019
Exclusion Criteria:
  • Parent under 18 years of age
    For parents of infants who remain hospitalized, permission to approach for study refused by infant’s attending physician, NICU social worker, or NICU psychologist
    Parent with limited English proficiency
