Brief description of study
What is this study about?
We are investigating the effects of brief bouts of physical activity and bodily pain in adults with obstructive sleep apnea.
Who can participate?
Adults (ages 18-65) diagnosed with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.
Detailed description of study
What happens during study participation?
Participants will be asked to complete 5 visits for this research study (3 visits will be conducted in-person at the Physical Activity and Pain Lab in the IUPUI Athletic and Fitness Center located at 250 University Boulevard, Indianapolis, IN, 46202 and the other two visits will be conducted by phone or e-mail).
- Visit #1: Participants will be asked to complete a series of questionnaires regarding pain, sleep, and physical activity. A brief pain assessment will also be conducted using an algometer, which is a small device used to apply a controlled amount of pressure to a given area of the body. Participants will also be asked to wear an activity monitor during the day and at night for one week.
- Visits #2 and #4: Participants will be asked to complete either a walking intervention or a sitting intervention. Different assessments will be administered during each intervention to assess levels of fatigue and pain at specific time points.
- Visits #3 and #5: Participants will complete a follow-up assessment conducted by phone or e-mail.
Study participation will last approximately 1.5-2 weeks.
Incentive/compensation
- Participants will receive a gift card for completing all of the study requirements.
- Parking will also be validated for each visit that takes place at IUPUI.
