Brief description of study
Build decision support tools that can be used in future clinical trials to identify when children with septic shock should or should not be transfused with red blood cells.
Detailed description of study
Determine which clinical, hemodynamic, and blood product-specific factors should drive RBC transfusion decision-making in children with septic shock.
Identify immune phenotypes that predict differential response to RBC transfusion in children with septic shock.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Sepsis, Riley

Age: Between 1 Years - 17 Years

Gender: All
Inclusion Criteria:
- • Admission to a participating PICU
- • Age < 18 years
- • Septic shock with onset within the past 48 hours
Exclusion Criteria:
• Receipt of any blood product transfusion within 4 weeks prior to sepsis onset
• Patient on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or a plan to initiate ECMO at the time of screening
• Limitation of care order in place at the time of screening
• Clinical suspicion of (or undergoing evaluation for) brain death
• Cardiopulmonary bypass within the past 5 days
• Uncorrected cyanotic congenital heart disease
• Prior enrollment in the TROPICS study
