Brief description of study

This study is being done to see if there is an effect of light sources or skin color on 3D facial scans. The results may help dentists improve the accuracy of facial scanning by using a light source that works best with a patient’s skin color.

Detailed description of study

Participants will be asked to answer a three-question survey, then be prepped and sit for a 3D facial scan.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: dentistry, equipment validation
  • Age: 18 years - 75 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria:
  • No medical conditions that alter facial appearance
  • Self-identified as African Americans, Asians, or Whites.
  • Subjects without obvious facial scar tissues, facial deformities, or history of major facial trauma
  • Understand and follow the functional command of English (turn head from left to right)
  • Ability to understand and provide informed consent before starting the study. Ability and willingness to comply with all study requirements
Exclusion Criteria:
  • Individuals who refuse to participate in the research.
  • Self-identified as other races, such as two or more races, American Indian and Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islander.
  • Subjects with facial hairs, including beards, mustaches, goatees, or sideburns.
  • Individuals with unstable occlusion
