Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) can be used as a biomarker for physiological events including predicting neurological recovery during therapeutic hypothermia for cardiac arrest, and to risk stratify patients for recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) following catheter ablation.

Detailed description of study

Outcome A - To use nerve activity within SKNA recordings as a biomarker of neurological status during TTM for cardiac arrest.
SKNA recordings will be obtained from patients undergoing the TTM protocol for cardiac arrest.  The results will be used to test the hypothesis that low SKNA would be associated with poor neurological outcome.  We then hypothesize that in those with poor neurologic outcome undergoing TTM, there will be an altered relationship between SKNA and heart rate, and low nerve burst activity.  

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Cardiac arrest, atrial fibrilation
  • Age: Between 18 Years - 100 Years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria:
    • Men and womender than 18 years of age
    • Undergo TTM fordiac arrest as part of the patients’ routine care
Exclusion Criteria:
  • ·         Pacemaker dependent
    o   Pacing artifacts prevents SKNA analyses
    ·         Allergic to skin patch electrodes
    ·         Current employees, student or trainee of Krannert Cardiovascular Research Center
    o   Vulnerable population
