Brief description of study
Why is this study being done?
The purpose of this study is to determine if participating in small group sessions with other school nurses to discuss stressors, learning coping skills, and practice coping skills (called mind body medicine skills group) has an effect on school nurses’ mental health, physical health, health behavior, and professional well-being.
We’d also like to learn if school nurses think some of the skills learned during the skills group may be appropriate and helpful for students they serve.
THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Indiana school nurses who work directly with students in 4th grade or higher will be invited directly by the study team to participate via the Indiana Association of School Nurses.
Detailed description of study
What will happen during the study?
- If you agree to be in the study, you will be randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to a group who participates in the mind body medicine skill group and completes questionnaires or to a group who only completes questionnaires. No matter what group you are assigned to, you will complete an online survey three different times over a five-month period.
- Each time you take an online survey, which will be emailed to you or sent in a message, it should take about 15-20 minutes.
- For those assigned to participate in the mind body medicine skill group, you will also attend eight weekly two-hour group sessions via Zoom videoconferencing platform.
- During the group sessions held each week, you will practice breathing exercises, discuss present moment feelings, and learn and practice new mind body skills that involve such interactive activities as drawing, journaling, visualization, and body movement.
- You will be in this study for about five months.
Incentive/compensation
- You will receive a $10 gift card for each survey completed for a possible total of $30.
- If you are assigned to the mind body medicine skills group, you will also receive $10 for each session you attend for a possible total of $80.
