Brief description of study
Why is this study being done?
Researchers at Indiana University's School of Public Health are conducting a research study to establish a reference (or normal) range for magnesium levels in healthy adults.
Your participation will help researchers find out what the normal levels of magnesium are and this data will help doctors and researchers to identify those with low magnesium levels

Who can take part?
Healthy adults, ages 18-65 years, with a BMI (body mass index) within range of 18-35 (at least 110 pounds).

Detailed description of study
What will happen during the study?
(1) You will complete a phone screen (10 min.) with research staff to determine if you qualify
(2) If you are eligible and choose to participate, you will be asked to attend one study visit (1½
hrs)
) to the the Nutrition Research Center on IU campus in Bloomington, IN.
The study visit will include the following:
- The visit will be scheduled in the morning as you will be required to fast for 8-10 hours before the clinic visit.
- Complete a medical history form, list your use of medications and supplements and undergo a diet recall for the past 24 hours.
- Your height, weight, and blood pressure will be measured.
- A blood sample will be collected to assess metabolic measures (i.e., glucose, liver enzymes).
- A urine sample will be collected for a drug screen and a pregnancy test (if female).
Incentive/compensation
- You will be compensated $50 for your time and paid parking will be provided.
- You may also receive a copy of your blood test results (by request).
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Healthy

Age: Between 18 Years - 65 Years

Inclusion Criteria:
- Overall good health
- Body mass index (BMI): 18-35 kg/m2
- Normal blood pressure (≤ 120/80)
- Must be willing to attend an in-person study visit in Bloomington, IN
Exclusion Criteria:
- Diagnosis of current chronic disease such as hypertension, diabetes, hepatitis, anemia, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, or other chronic disease (e.g., cancer)
- Women who are currently pregnant or trying to become pregnant
- History of hospitalization for acute illness in the previous 1 month
- Body weight is less than 110 lbs
- Have donated blood within the last month
- Currently smoke tobacco and/or use nicotine products
- History of drug or alcohol dependence within the last year
