Brief description of study
Why is this study being done?
Researchers at Indiana University are doing a study to learn more about the impact of dairy (milk products) on health.
Who can take part?
Adults, 18-74 years of age, who do not have a severe allergy or intolerance to dairy.
Detailed description of study
What will happen during the study?
You will be asked to attend 5 study visits at the either at the Clinical Research Center (CRC) on IUPUI campus in Indianapolis or the Nutrition Research Center on IU Bloomington campus over the course of 12 weeks. During the study, you will need to consume either dairy or non-dairy products provided to you by the study (i.e., either dairy, normal or low fat, or a non-dairy protein bar) daily for 4 weeks. Study foods will be provided to you while you are participating.
Study participation involves the following:
- Documentation of medication and supplements, completion of a medical history and assessment of physical activity
- Measurements of blood pressure, height, weight, and waist circumference will be taken.
- Blood draws for blood lipids and metabolic measures (i.e., glucose and insulin)
- Complete a weekly log to track your consumption of the study foods as well as physical activity.
Incentive/compensation
- You will receive up to $485 for completing all of the study requirements.

Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Obesity, Overweight

Age: 18 years - 74 years

Gender: All
Inclusion Criteria:
- Overweight or obesity (body mass index 25-40 kg/m2)
- High fasting triglycerides (> 120 mg/dL)
- Must be willing to attend in-person study visits in Indianapolis, IN or Bloomington, IN
Exclusion Criteria:
- Severe allergy/intolerance to dairy foods
- Diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes via medical history or lab result
- Diagnosis of hypertension or elevated blood pressure
- Diagnosis of other cardiovascular disease
- Diagnosis of cancer
- Diagnosis of other health conditions known to impact study findings (i.e., liver, renal diseases)
- Unstable or recent use of medications known to impact study findings (i.e., statins, antibiotics)
- Pregnancy
- Drug or alcohol abuse
