Brief description of study
What is the purpose of this study?
Our central hypothesis is that structural and personally-mediated racism and its association with adverse pregnancy outcomes can be measured. The overall objectives of this study are to measure the burden of racism in an obstetric population and its impact on preterm birth and hypertensive disease of pregnancy.
THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - We will prospectively recruit birthing people who are receiving prenatal care in the Indiana University (IU) Health and Eskenazi Health systems. Members of the research team will identify potential participants in the medical record, confirm eligibility, and approach potential participants to recruit and consent in the outpatient prenatal care clinics.
Detailed description of study
What will happen during the study?
AIM 1
- After informed consent, all participants will complete the Perceived Stress and Everyday Discrimination scale questionnaires online (RedCap) and these will be automatically scored; a paper version will also be available.
- Additionally, researchers will supplement the medical record with a standardized obstetric, medical, and social history questionnaire.
- Maternal blood samples will be collected at enrollment and during the mid trimester lab draw during pregnancy (between 24-28 weeks' gestation). Approximately 2 teaspoons of maternal blood will be collected. Every effort will be made to collect study blood at the time of routine, clinically indicated venipuncture.
AIM 2
- Participants recruited for Aim 1 will be included for this portion of the study.
- Participants will be interviewed on their experiences related to racism and discrimination.
