Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence rate of hearing loss and cerumen impaction in residents of senior living facilities and identify barriers to managing hearing devices and cerumen. Our long-term objective is to improve the effective identification and management of hearing health in senior living facilities.

THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Researchers will work with facility staff at senior living facilities to determine appropriate and convenient times and methods to inform residents about the study. We will coordinate with facility staff to schedule days where study staff will visit the facility and conduct the assessments. There will be sign up sheets where residents who are interested in the study can sign up for a time slot on the scheduled day of the assessments. Facility staff will look over the list of residents who signed up, and then help determine if the resident is able to consent for themselves. This decision will be based on their experience interacting with the resident on a day-to-day basis. They will not access any medical records for this determination. If residents are capable of consenting for themselves, the consent process will be conducted, and then the assessment will follow.

Detailed description of study

A certified audiologist, developmental psychologist (PI Castellanos and Co-PI Beer), and trained research staff with clinical expertise and experience with older adults, including those with hearing loss, will conduct physical exams and administer questionnaires to participants.

The current testing protocol is estimated to range from 30 – 45 minutes.
