Brief description of study
Why is this study being done?
Tinnitus is a common issue where people hear sounds like ringing in their ears without an external source. It affects many people and can be very disruptive to daily life. The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of online versus in-person methods for assessing tinnitus. This will help us improve tinnitus evaluation and treatment options for patients.
This study involves completing 1 online session at your home and attending 1 in-person session on IU Bloomington campus.
Who can take part?
Individuals 18 years of age or older who have had continuous tinnitus for longer than 6 months.
Detailed description of study
What will happen during the study?
You will be randomly assigned, like the flip of a coin, to start with either the online session (1 hr) or the in-person session (1-2 hrs). Then 1-2 weeks later, you will be invited to participate in the other session. All sessions involve completing perceptual tests (listening to various sounds and comparing those sounds with your tinnitus). Total study participation is approx. 3 hrs total.
1) In-person session (1-2 hrs):
- Involves an otoscopic check and tympanometry will be conducted to establish whether there are any external ear maladies (such as earwax or middle-ear pathology) and a hearing test (pure-tone audiometry -- testing hearing across frequencies) to verify whether you have hearing loss or not.
- This session will take place at the Health Sciences Building in the Hearing Science laboratory on IU Bloomington campus.
2) Online session (1 hr):
- You will receive a unique participant ID and a link to access the evaluation website.
- The evaluation Involves completing a brief online questionnaire at home about the type of equipment being used and whether or not the you think that you have hearing loss.
- Your tinnitus will be measured using common tests that are used to describe tinnitus (this is done by being presented sounds and then you report your perceptions of those sounds).
Incentive/compensation
- You will receive a total compensation of $30 in cash or gift card ($10 for first session and $20 for second session), along with a copy of your hearing test results
