Brief description of study
What is the purpose of this study?
Dietary supplementation with dried plums has been shown to reduce bone loss in women. The purpose of this research study is to understand how dried plums are doing this by studying the immune cell, gut microbe, and bone responses.
Who can take part?
Women between the ages of 60-75 years who are in generally good health.
Detailed description of study
What will happen during the study?
- Participants will complete five study visits at the IU Clinical Research Center over about a 3-month period
- Have bone density and physical function assessed
- Consume 5-6 dried plums/day in addition to their regular diet for a portion of the study
- Provide blood and stool samples and complete a 3-day diet records at several time points during the study
- Answer questions about their medical history, diet, physical activity and exposure to sunlight throughout the study
What are the study benefits?
Participants will receive information about their bone density, physical function, and dietary habits at no cost. They will also receive $250 for completing the study.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Healthy, Postmenopausal

Age: 60 years - 75 years

Gender: Female
Inclusion Criteria.
- Willing to consume dried plums
- Can walk without assistance
- Able to give informed consent
Exclusion Criteria.
- Previous diagnosis of osteoporosis, metabolic bone disease, renal disease, stroke, heart attack, type 2 diabetes, liver disease or autoimmune diseases (e.g., type 1 diabetes, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis) by a doctor
- Treated for cancer within 12 months of starting the study
- Currently taking hormone replacement, steroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, prebiotic or probiotic supplements, or natural products with estrogen-like effects
- Currently smoke or consume more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day
- Regularly consume dried plums or prune juice more than 1 day per week
