Brief description of study

What is the purpose of this study?

Infants who require formal assessment of their difficulties safely swallowing liquids often have other medical problems and may require multiple other medical visits. The goal of this study is to determine if an infant's neurological status at the start of their swallow assessment and their caregiver's ability to cope with their infant's medical needs impacts the infant's ability to improve their safe swallowing.

THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - New patients to the Aerodigestive clinic aged 2 to 24 months will be identified as candidates for enrollment. Upon their first presentation to the clinic, a trained coordinator or primary investigator will review the study goals and informed consent with the patient’s families.

Detailed description of study

What will happen during the study?

  • Determine baseline neurological function in patients referred to the Aerodigestive clinic.
  • Formally assess types of and degree of coping in families of pediatric patients in the Aerodigestive Clinic using a standardized scale.
  • Correlate baseline neurological function and/or types of and degree of coping in families of pediatric patients in the Aerodigestive clinic to results of video fluoroscopic studies and the total number of Months spent in Aerodigestive clinic.
