Brief description of study

What is the purpose of this study?

  1. Test the effect of preoperative carbohydrate loading on hospital LOS after complex hepatopancreaticobiliary surgeries.
  2. Test the effect of preoperative carbohydrate loading on other post-operative complications including surgical site infections (SSI), readmissions, delayed gastric emptying (DGE), insulin resistance and death
THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Study personnel will identify the patients undergoing pre-operative evaluation at the surgical outpatient clinic (SOPA clinic). All eligible patients (fulfilling the inclusion criteria with no exclusion criteria) will be approached by the research team about study participation.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: hepatectomy, biliary reconstructions, distal or total pancreatectomy, pancreatoduodenectomy
  • Age: 18 years - 100 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria:

1) At least 18 years of age and older.

2) Patients undergoing hepatectomy, biliary reconstructions, distal or total pancreatectomy, pancreatoduodenectomy,and any other complex hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery.

Exclusion Criteria:

  1. Pregnant or undergoing obstetrical procedure
  2. Enrolled in a current prospective trial
  3. HbA1C ≥ 8.6
  4. Type I Diabetics
  5. Unable to provide informed consent
  6. Necrosectomy patients
  7. Patients with preoperative diagnosis of intestinal obstruction or delayed gastric emptying (DGE)
