Brief description of study

What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this study is to provide a framework for collecting biospecimens from pediatric patients with IBD or suspected to have IBD, from which clinical data can be linked to conduct a variety of research studies which may include:

  • Understanding the genetic, environmental, and microbial factors influencing IBD
  • Development of new IBD prognostic and diagnostic information
  • Responses to current therapeutic management and IBD care
THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Potential participants will be identified when their physician orders a screening endoscopy/colonoscopy to be done as standard of care for potential diagnosis of IBD. These individuals will be approached or contacted by the research team about study participation. Blood samples will be drawn during IV placement and tissue not needed for clinical care will be reserved for this research project.

Detailed description of study

What will happen during the study?

Pediatric IBD patients treated at Riley Hospital for Children will be asked to join the Peds IBD Biobank.  Sources of biospecimens may include blood, stool, urine, and saliva. Every effort will be made to collect these specimens at the time of standard of care sampling.  This may include when patients go the laboratory for blood sampling, or during routine medical infusions when IV lines are placed and blood is routinely drawn.  In addition, when stool studies are ordered, a small aliquot of stool may be sampled for biobanking.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

Inclusion criteria:

  • Pediatric patients with known diagnosis of IBD (Crohn’s, Ulcerative Colitis, or Indeterminate Colitis) currently or previously seen by Riley Pediatric GI
  • Patients strongly suspected of IBD undergoing diagnostic testing, which may include screening blood, stool, and/or endoscopic testing

Exclusion criteria:

  • IBD patients not treated by Riley Pediatric GI (due to transfer to adult IBD care, move away from current care, or primary IBD care at another facility)
  • Patients without an IBD diagnosis (infectious colitis, allergic colitis, microscopic colitis, etc.)
