Primary Investigator
Brief description of study
The purpose of this study is to provide weekly introductory mindfulness-based stress reduction sessions. Mindfulness-based stress reduction is a way to manage emotions and increases our ability to handle whatever is happening in life. The group sessions will be held virtually; and there will be separate groups for adolescents (14-18 years of age) with diabetes (type 1 or type 2) and parents/caregivers of teens with diabetes (type 1 or type 2).
Detailed description of study
We will offer two groups: one for teens (14-18 years of age) with diabetes (type 1 or type 2) and the second for parents/caregivers of teens with diabetes (type 1 or type 2). The groups will include up to 15 participants.
- The sessions will introduce the concepts of mindfulness and how mindfulness skills and practices can help with diabetes self-care. Each group will participate in a once weekly introduction to mindfulness session. Mindfulness sessions will be held virtually on Zoom.
- There will be an introductory session followed by 6-week group sessions, for a total of 7-weeks. The sessions will be an hour long held on Zoom. Participants will be asked to have their camera and sound on.
- We will track attendance and measure participant's satisfaction through an acceptability survey after the session.
- The sessions will be held on an ongoing and rolling basis including new participants as each group is finished.
