Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to provide weekly introductory mindfulness-based stress reduction sessions. Mindfulness-based stress reduction is a way to manage emotions and increases our ability to handle whatever is happening in life. The group sessions will be held virtually; and there will be separate groups for adolescents (14-18 years of age) with diabetes (type 1 or type 2) and parents/caregivers of teens with diabetes (type 1 or type 2).

THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY -   The participants will consist of teens (14-18 years of age) with a diagnosis of diabetes (type 1 or type 2) and parents/caregivers of teens with a diagnosis of diabetes (type 1 or type 2) who receive care in the Riley Diabetes Center will be enrolled.   Recruitment for the study will occur either by the healthcare provider sharing the study information at clinic appointments, or virtually with the study information posted on the Riley Diabetes Clinic research webpage accessible by patients and parents/caregivers, or with a recruitment flyer posted in the clinic.

Detailed description of study

We will offer two groups: one for teens (14-18 years of age) with diabetes (type 1 or type 2) and the second for parents/caregivers of teens with diabetes (type 1 or type 2). The groups will include up to 15 participants.

  • The sessions will introduce the concepts of mindfulness and how mindfulness skills and practices can help with diabetes self-care. Each group will participate in a once weekly introduction to mindfulness session. Mindfulness sessions will be held virtually on Zoom.
  • There will be an introductory session followed by 6-week group sessions, for a total of 7-weeks. The sessions will be an hour long held on Zoom. Participants will be asked to have their camera and sound on.
  • We will track attendance and measure participant's satisfaction through an acceptability survey after the session.
  • The sessions will be held on an ongoing and rolling basis including new participants as each group is finished.

This study investigates mindfulness-based stress reduction for teens with diabetes and their caregivers. Mindfulness-based stress reduction is a technique to manage emotions and improve the ability to handle life's challenges. The study involves virtual group sessions for adolescents aged 14-18 with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, as well as their parents or caregivers.

Participants will attend weekly virtual sessions on Zoom to learn mindfulness skills that can assist with diabetes self-care. Each group will have an introductory session followed by six weekly sessions, totaling seven weeks. Attendance will be tracked, and participant satisfaction will be measured through a survey after the sessions.
