Brief description of study
Why is this study being done?
The goal of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a new aphasia treatment focusing on the ability to understand and produce sentences and stories.
Who can take part?
People with aphasia following a left hemisphere stroke.
Detailed description of study
What will happen during the study?
- Participants will complete up to 30 visits (around 2 hours each), including eligibility & follow-up testing sessions.
- Participants may complete study visits in-person at Purdue University (West Lafayette campus) OR online at home (via secure Zoom).
- During the study visits, participants will be asked to complete a set of tasks, such as describing pictures they see on the computer screen, reading and/or repeating sentences and stories. All tasks are non-invasive.
- The study duration will be about 4-5 months, depending on the number of sessions needed.
Incentive/compensation
- For each eligibility testing session, the participant will be paid $20.
- If participants are eligible for the treatment study & complete the entire treatment study, they will receive a total of $200 paid out in increments during study.
- For in-person participants, payment will be made in cash or gift cards depending on participant’s preference.
- For remote participation, participants will be paid out via gift cards.

Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Aphasia

Age: 21 years - 85 years

Gender: All
Inclusion Criteria:
- 21-85 years old
- aphasia following left hemisphere stroke
- Native speaker of North American English
- Normal or corrected-to-normal hearing and vision
- If completing virtually, a stable internet connection is required via laptop or desktop computer (cannot complete via iPad or tablet)
Exclusion Criteria:
- History of other neurological disease (Parkinson's disease, dementia, etc.)
- Cannot be actively participating in Speech Therapy throughout the entire study period
