Brief description of study
The purpose of this study is to recruit individuals to form a patient advisory council, actively involving patients with lived experiences with high blood pressure. Our goal is to gather patient feedback on their priorities and preferences regarding the management of blood pressure among patients being discharged from the emergency department.
THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Trained Department of Emergency Medicine research personnel will screen the ED tracking board for adult patients under evaluation who meet the above inclusion/exclusion criteria. The treating clinician for potentially eligible participants will be approached to determine if the patient is anticipated to be discharged home and if there are any concerns regarding decisional capacity. Potentially eligible participants will then be approached about study participation. Interested individuals will be given the contact information of the study team and will self-schedule their session.

The purpose of this study is to engage patients with high blood pressure in forming a patient advisory council. This study investigates how these individuals, who have been discharged from the emergency department, prioritize and prefer the management of their condition. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a condition where the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high, which can lead to health problems such as heart disease.
Participants will be involved in a one-time virtual interview lasting 60 to 90 minutes. This interview can take place via Zoom or phone. The study aims to gather valuable insights from participants to improve blood pressure management strategies after discharge from the emergency department.
- Who can participate: Adults over 18 years old with undiagnosed or established high blood pressure who haven't visited a primary care physician in the past 6 months can participate. Participants must have been recently treated at IU Health Methodist Emergency Department.
- Study details: Participants will engage in a one-time virtual interview lasting 60 to 90 minutes to provide feedback on blood pressure management priorities and preferences.
