Brief description of study

This study is being conducted to learn more about how the brain's learning systems work in teenagers who use cannabis (marijuana). Our goal is to see if these brain systems can predict how well a teen might do in a treatment program for marijuana use called contingency management. Contingency management is a type of treatment that uses rewards to encourage avoiding marijuana. We need your help to find markers in the brain that predict cannabis use disorder symptoms and treatment success.

You and your child may be eligible if…

  • You are 18 years or older
  • Your child is 14-17 years old
  • Your child uses cannabis (marijuana)
  • Your child can have an MRI brain scan (for example, they don’t have metal in their body)

Detailed description of study

Prior to in-person assessment, participants will complete a pre-screening phone call to determine preliminary eligibility (for youths ages 14–17, this pre-screening will be conducted with a parent or legal guardian). The prescreening will assess key eligibility criteria including recent cannabis use and substance use history to avoid unnecessary in-person visits and reduce burden on families.

The study includes both in-person visits and virtual check-ins. There are three in-person visits (1-2 hrs each) that will take place at the IU Health Neuroscience Center in Indianapolis, IN.  There are ten weekly virtual visits that will take about 10-15 minutes each via Microsoft Teams.

Teens will have an MRI scan, which is a special picture of the brain. They will also answer questions and provide a urine sample for drug testing.

Parents will be involved by filling out forms about their child.

It is estimated that study participation will last approximately 13-17 weeks.

Families will receive up to $371.80 total for completing all of the study requirements.  Youth will also have the chance to earn drawings for additional prizes via a virtual prize box.
