Brief description of study
Are you a caregiver of someone with memory loss, dementia, or Alzheimer’s disease AND you live in a rural area of Indiana? Join our study!
Our study is looking at how a smartphone app can help caregivers of dementia patients. The app is designed for people living in rural areas to support caregivers in managing the challenges associated with dementia care. Your participation could help us see if the app can lessen caregivers' stress and improve the health of dementia patients.
We are inviting adults (ages 18 and older living in rural Indiana who are caring for someone with dementia and are able to use a smartphone to participate.
Participants will complete all study tasks from home, with no in-person visits required.
Detailed description of study
If you agree to participate today, you will be asked to do the following:
- Use a smartphone app that either provides guidance on dementia care or pairs you with a care coach to develop a caregiving plan. The study will track how the app is used and its effects on caregivers and patients. You may be loaned a smartphone to use during the study, if needed.
- You will have scheduled phone appointments with a research assistant at the start, after 3 months, and after 6 months to complete assessments. These appointments will be about 90 minutes long. Your study participation will last about 6 months.
- You will receive compensation for each completed study appointment.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Healthy, Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias, ADRD

Age: 18 years or above

Gender: All
- Primary rural informal caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD), who are community-dwelling and not in permanent care facilities such as as a nursing home, hospice facility, or locked memory unit of an assisted living facility.
- Must be able to read and understand English.
- Formal caregivers (i.e., nurse or employed caregiver of the patient)
- Involved in another trial that would prevent or interfere with study objectives.
- Have a sensory or other impairment prohibiting the use of a mobile touchscreen device or other study activity (after correction)
