Brief description of study

Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD, causes parts of the intestine or bowel to get red and swollen. It’s a chronic condition, which means it lasts a long time or constantly comes and goes. Many children with IBD also have anxiety and depression. this study is looking to see how spirituality and mood disturbances can affect IBD.

THIS STUDY IS ENROLLING BY INVITATION ONLY - Current patients of our pediatric GI division age 11-18 years with established or newly-diagnosed IBD will be approached for participation. Participants approached for participation in either a private clinic room or infusion suite of the hospital.

Detailed description of study

Aim:  to appraise spirituality and mood disturbance in patients with PIBD 
Sub-aim:  to examine the correlation of spirituality and mood with clinical remission

Participants will complete surveys at week 1, week 24 +/-6, week 52 +/- 6.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: Inflammatory Bowel Disease, IBD, Riley
  • Age: 11 years - 18 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion criteria:

  • Age group 11-18 y.o.
  • English-speaking PIBD patients at the outpatient GI clinic. 

This study investigates how spirituality and mood changes affect children with Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (PIBD). Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or IBD, makes parts of the intestine or bowel red and swollen. It is a long-lasting condition that can be constant or come and go. Many children with IBD also experience anxiety and depression.

Participants in this study will complete surveys at different times to understand their spirituality and mood. These surveys will be done at the start, around week 24, and around week 52. The study will look at how these factors connect with the children's health status.

  • Who can participate: Children aged 11 to 18 years who speak English, are current patients in the pediatric GI division, and have established or newly diagnosed IBD are eligible.
  • Study details: Participants will complete surveys about their spirituality and mood at specified weeks. This will help understand their connection with health without changing any medication or treatment.
