Music and Imagery to Support Self-Care Management in Adolescents and Young Adults with Sickle Cell Disease
Music and Imagery for Managing Sickle Cell Disease Symptoms

Primary Investigator
Brief description of study
The overall goal of this study is to examine whether an individual Music and Imagery (MI) intervention can produce a clinically meaningful change in pain, depressive symptoms, and anxiety for adolescents and young adults with sickle cell disease.
Detailed description of study
We propose a single group, multi-case study design with AYA interviews (n=6) to examine an 8-session music and imagery intervention in AYA with SCD. As a proof-of-concept study, we will examine whether there are clinically meaningful change scores at the individual level for our primary endpoints (pain, depressive symptoms, anxiety); measures will be taken at T0: Baseline, T1: mid-intervention (post-session 4) and T2: post-intervention (post-session 8).
We will conduct interviews with individual participants post-intervention and a larger focus group with all participants (after 1:1 interviews are complete). These interviews will focus on concrete information about participants' experiences with intervention content, measures, and study design, rather than broader questions of lived experience. The sample includes all participants and is adequate to answer the proposed questions. Findings will inform changes that may be needed to the intervention, study design, or measures prior to conducting a larger RCT pilot study.
Study sessions and data collection will delivered/collected virtually using the IU approved Zoom platform for telehealth delivery (HIPAA compliant). Therapists will use their computers/laptops to deliver the intervention. Participants will use their personal devices (computer/tablet/smart phone) from their home location.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Sickle cell disease, SCD, Riley
-
Age: 14 years - 22 years
-
Gender: All
Inclusion Criteria
AYA ages 14-22 years
Diagnosis of SCD
Exclusion Criteria
Significant hearing or cognitive impairment
Planned major medical event in the next 12 weeks such as (but not limited to) surgery or stem cell transplant
This study investigates the use of music and imagery to support self-care management in adolescents and young adults with sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a condition where red blood cells are shaped like a sickle, which can block blood flow and cause pain. The purpose of this study is to see if music and imagery can help reduce pain, depressive symptoms, and anxiety in these individuals.
Participants will take part in an 8-session music and imagery intervention. They will have interviews before, during, and after the sessions to assess any changes in their symptoms. The study will be conducted virtually, with therapists and participants using computers or smart devices to connect from their homes.
- Who can participate: Participants must be adolescents or young adults aged 14 to 22 years with a diagnosis of sickle cell disease. They should not have significant hearing or cognitive impairments and must not have planned major medical events in the next 12 weeks.
- Study details: Participants will engage in online sessions using music and imagery to investigate the potential for managing symptoms. They will use their own devices to connect from home, while therapists will guide the sessions remotely.
