Brief description of study

Every parent wants the best for their child. We are looking for mothers and their teens to join a study about how a mother's past experiences can affect her child’s emotions and how they respond to stress as they grow up.

We will also study how these experiences may relate to alcohol use as children grow into their teen years.

Who may be able to join?

We are looking for mothers and their children ages 12 to 14 to take part in this study.

The research team will ask additional questions to make sure the study is a safe and appropriate fit for both mother and child.

Why take part?

Every family has different experiences. By taking part, you can help researchers better understand how stress, emotions, and brain development may be connected as children grow.

Detailed description of study

What happens during the study?

  1. Phone Call: First, we’ll do a pre-screening to make sure the study is a good fit for you and your child. Since we use an MRI machine, children with certain metal items in or on their body may not be able to take part. This can include some implants, prosthetics, or orthodontic devices. We will ask questions to check for any metal in the body. Children who are uncomfortable in small spaces may also not be able to have the scan.
  2. First Visit: You and your child may visit us at the IU Health Neuroscience Center in Indianapolis, IN. We have private, quiet rooms where we will talk with you and your teen about your history and feelings. Participating children will do a urine screen since they must not have used substances, including alcohol, in order to be eligible.
  3. Second Visit: Your child may have an MRI scan. An MRI is a way to take pictures of the brain. It does not use radiation. A trained technician will be there to make sure everything is safe and easy. Female children will do a urine pregnancy test to make sure they are safe to go in the MRI scanner.
  4. Follow-ups: Later on, we may send you some surveys to fill out on your own computer or phone. These surveys would be completed about 6 and 18 months after your first visit. You and your child may also visit us at the IU Health Neuroscience Center in Indianapolis to complete interviews and other activities about 1 and 2 years after your first visit.
  5. Compensation: Families can earn up to $485 over the two-year study period for completing all of the screening visits, scanning visits, and follow-ups.

We make sure you and your child are safe and comfortable every step of the way.
