Brief description of study
Get a Free Hearing Evaluation While Helping Advance Aging Research!
Do you ever wonder how hearing changes as we get older? Researchers at Indiana University are doing a study to learn more about how the brain processes sound as we age. By taking part, you can help advance hearing and aging research by helping us find new ways to support better hearing and clearer understanding for years to come.
You may be able to join this study if:
- You are between the ages of 55 and 80
- You speak English as your first language
- You have no substantial hearing loss or cognitive issues (hearing and cognition will be tested in the lab during your first visit).
- Are able to attend 2-3 in-person study visits at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.
Detailed description of study
Before the study begins, we will do a few simple checks once you arrive, including:
- A brief memory and thinking screen
- A look inside your ears
- A full hearing test
During the study, you will:
- Listen to sounds through headphones, hear numbers in your left or right ear, and other hearing tasks.
- These tasks are safe, non-invasive, and similar to everyday listening.
- It takes 2–3 visits to complete the study (each visit is 1.5 to 2.5 hours).
- Total study participation time is about 3 to 6 hours.
- All study visits will take place at the Indiana University Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences in Bloomington, IN. It is located at 2631 East Discovery Parkway, Bloomington, IN 47408.
Visit times and dates are flexible. We will send clear directions when we schedule you for your initial study visit.
As a thank you for your time, you will receive:
- A free full hearing evaluation
- An auditory processing evaluation
- $15 per hour, paid in cash at the end of the study or if you decide not to continue at any point
