Brief description of study
Join Us and Take Part in Brain Activity Research at Indiana University!
Your brain is always working—helping you think, remember, and make decisions. This study is looking at how different parts of the brain work together.
We are also studying a safe, non-invasive method called TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) to see how it may change brain activity. TMS uses magnetic pulses on the outside of the head—no surgery or implants are involved.
TMS is an investigational research tool. This means it is still being studied and is not approved by the FDA.
Your participation will help researchers learn more about how the brain works and how we can better understand thinking and memory.
Detailed description of study
If you join our study, you will complete 4-6 study visits over a period of up to 6 months. Study visits will take place at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. Visits are scheduled with flexibility.
To better understand how TMS affects the brain, we combine it with brain imaging and recording tools:
- fMRI, which takes pictures of brain activity
- EEG, which measures electrical signals in the brain
Study visits involve:
- Having brain scans using fMRI (a safe way to take pictures of your brain)
- Trying TMS, a non-invasive brain stimulation method
- Wearing an EEG cap to measure brain activity
- Completing simple thinking and memory tasks, such as pressing buttons to respond to words or images on a screen
- Each visit is a little different, but all are safe and guided by trained staff.
- Total participation time is about 10–15 hours.
As a thank you for your time, you will receive $30 per hour spent participating and the national mileage rate for medical purposes if traveling more than 20 miles. Parking passes for the nearest accessible parking garage will be provided upon request.
Eligibility of study
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Conditions: Healthy

Age: 18 years - 80 years

Gender: All
- English Speaking
- History of any Axis I DSM-V disorder, excluding major depressive disorder or generalized anxiety disorders
- Current history of substance abuse or dependence (excluding nicotine)
- Women who are pregnant or breast feeding
- Intracranial implants (e.g. aneurysms clips, shunts, stimulators, cochlear implants, or electrodes), cardiac pacemakers, or vagus Nerve stimulation device
- Increased risk of seizure for any reason, including prior diagnosis of epilepsy, seizure disorder, increased intracranial pressure, or history of significant head trauma with loss of consciousness for ≥ 5 minutes.
- Neurological disorder including, but not limited to: space occupying brain lesion; any history of seizures, history of cerebrovascular accident; fainting, cerebral aneurysm, Dementia, Hungtington chorea; Multiple Sclerosis.
- Current use of medications known to lower the seizure threshold and/or affect working memory
- Other medical conditions or comorbidities which, in the opinion of the Investigator, would interfere with safety, study compliance or data interpretation.
